“(un)Qualified” by Steven Furtick
I would say that out of all the books that I had read in 2015, this one was the timeliest. I am in the early stages of planting and launching a church and “(un)Qualified” was a voice resonating in my head when in my heart I knew I have been called to this daunting task. Steven Furtick discusses throughout the book our “third words.” We have many, I had too many. Continuously, as I read through text, I kept finding myself nodding in agreement, thinking the author must’ve had a video camera planted somewhere, and at times outright saying “how did you know.” This book is an encouraging book to read to silence the voice of the devil who is squawking in our ear all the time. I really enjoyed how Steven Furtick applied the Bible story of Jacob and Esau in the text several times. The author also uses other Bible scripture, recognizable biblical individuals, as well as personal life stories to bring home the points of “(un)Qualified.” Living an authentic Christ centered life is the key to reaching each of God’s milestones for our lives journeys. Our smallness (3rd word) in the hands of God becomes colossal. This book would be a great read and discussion book for a small group. I even think this book should be read by church planters or others who have been called by God to missions, business startups, college students etc. because as we step out in faith in life, “unqualified” will be sounding from a bullhorn as soon as that first step is taken (sometimes before the first step). This book will encourage you, help you accept yourself, embrace God’s process of change etc. and in that gain God confidence … not self-confidence, but God confidence.
